On my most recent trip to Duluth my friend really wanted to go on the tour of this ship. We were there on a pretty hot day and while the gift shop was cooled, the rest of the ship was not, so I would suggest getting something to drink before starting the tour.
Touring this ship is so cool! We went for the history, but mostly the ghosts because we're nerds like that. While I didn't notice any paranormal activity I was absolutely blown away by how gorgeous this ship is! Our tour guide was a lot of fun and knew all about the ship and Lake Superior. Little advice, call ahead to book your ticket because the tours sell out fast!
The tour however, was good and entertaining.
Our tour guide was pretty good, she's obviously done it a few times and was good at identifying the rooms / areas that the people didn't have much interest in or were too hot to be in for too long. It was pretty cool to see some of the inner workings of such an old ship.
Be VERY careful purchasing clothing from the store. They are charging sales tax on it. Clothing in the state of Minnesota is TAX FREE.
The tour lasted about an hour and was a fun way to spend an afternoon down in Canal Park. If you are in the area and looking for some history on the Great Lakes shipping boats and all that sort of thing, this will be right up your alley.
One of the best haunted exhibits! Our group (including a 12 and 14 y/o) really enjoyed this tour very much. A perfect balance of creepy and fun, and with the best backdrop ever... a retired Ore Ship! Hats off to the actors... they were fantastic, and funny too. The artistic work was amazing... absolutely amazing. Highly recommend!
If you have kids or older people with you, you need to know that there are a LOT of stairs that have low ceilings, VERY steep steps and cramped quarters. There were several children under the age of 12 on the tour we were on and of course, they are kids, but if you have a baby, which a few did, it's going to be tough. I'm 6'5" and I was able to manage, but it was a LOT of ducking.
Our tour guide was fantastic and tried to engage everyone in the tour. He was knowledgeable and kept things interesting without overloading the group with information. Take good shoes with you on this tour as you go through the ship and there's a lot of steep steps.
